According to the International relations of the National Cartographic Center of Iran (NCC), this organization, in coordination with the Office of Border Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, participated in the meeting of the United Nations Group of Expert on Geographical Names (UNGEGN).
At the meeting of the United Nations Group of Expert on Geographical Names (UNGEGN), virtually held in New York from May 3-7, 2021, the representative of the National Cartographic Center expressed Iran's protest against the two reports of Saudi Arabia, which fake names were used in the text and maps instead of the name of the Persian Gulf.
While registering the official protest of Iran in writing, the protest was orally read, which led to the reaction of the representative of Saudi Arabia, who acknowledged the existence of the name of the Persian Gulf in all the historical books, as the only name mentioned to the sea between the Iranian plateau and the Arabian Peninsula, tried to justify their mistake by emphasizing the cordial relations between the two countries.
Dr. Jafarzadeh Imanabadi, Director General of the National Cartographic Center of Iran, also wrote two letters to Dr. Zarif, Minister of Foreign Affairs, thanking him for the support of the Office of Border Affairs and its Permanent Mission in New York, informing him of the organization's performance at the meeting.
Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations in New York also wrote a letter to the UNGEGN Secretariat, reflecting the extent of Iran's protest.
